LI NY: Sat.,June 8: Belmont Park
Saturday’s Belmont Stakes,
offered a surprising upset to 47,562 visitors.
Palace Malace, a 13-1 long shot won the 11th race beating out
the favorites, Oxbow and Orb that placed 2nd and 3rd,
and paying $29.60 for $2 bettors. This was the 145th running
of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of racing’s Triple Crown
aft of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
The winning horse hit the finish line with 3 1/4 lengths ahead
of the pack. Mike Smith was the winning jockey. The trainer was Todd Pletcher. for Cot Campbell, the 85 year-old syndicate owner. The run was 1 1/2 miles from the start gate.
The purse was valued at $1,000,000.
Of note is the fact that Thunder Gulch last won the Derby- Belmont double in 1995 and no horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.
Secretariat did so in 1973 with a 31-length win, an incredible feat not since matched.
Belmont Park is a member of NYRA, the New York Racing Association. The park was officially opened in 1905 by
August Belmont, Jr., and re-opened on Decoration Day, May 30, 1913.
