Robert Moses Astride New York
In case you missed it Robert Moses Astride New York presented last Saturday at the Winter Garden located at the World Financial Center in Battery Park City was a wowzer! Not only was it historical but downright entertaining. As a musical the voices sang boldly of the feats of the legendary empire builder, the man himself, Robert Moses ( 1888-1981 ). It is one of many productions that Brookfield Properties, the managing agent there is presenting this season. To check the calendar go to: ArtsWorldFinancialCenter.com
Robert Moses Astride New York was backed up by the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra now in its third season under the direction of Music Director Gary Fagin. It featured tenor Rinde Eckert in the lead and was complimented by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus under the direction of Dianne Berkun. They performed admirably
This musical performance lasted over two hours but was well worth the staving the cold winter’s night. It included three works by 20th century American composers. And these included Euday L. Bowman’s Twelth Street Rag, Scott Joplin’s Bethena, and Charles Ive’s Putnam Camp. This was followed by the music of the giants of the 20th century including Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, Richard Rogers’ You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught from South Pacific, James Taylor’s Sheed A Little Light, the music from West Side Story by Bernstein, Bob Dylan, Hammerstein, and of course, the house favorite, Gary Fagin whose compostions rang nobly.
In all a most enjoyable evening. And it was free of charge
