La Soiree des Grandes Crus, Jan.27, NYC
La Sirees des Grandes Crus, Thurs., Jan.27 at #82 Mercer Street in the Soho district of NYC was a superb event for lovers of Bordeux wine. A total of 17 producers from that region participated in this one-day tasting which included some of the best marks from France. Chateau La- Forchet, Chateau de Fieuzal, Chateau Dassault, Chateau Grand Mayne, and Chaeau La Conseillante were among the presenters. The latter offered an excellent Pomerol 2006, perhaps the most expensive wine of the night. It retails for $160. Another well balanced wine this writer discovered was the 2001 Chateau Meyney, from Ca Grands Crus. It had a lusty taste and was full flavored, a fine pairing with meat or fowl.
The event was sponsored by a number major commercial concerns selling to the U.S. market. These included HUGO BOSS, HSBC, OPEN SKIES, a division of BRITISH AIRWAYS, BREITING, SOFITEL, and PAYARD whose chocolate confections I’m still harboring. A total of 23 wines were on the ledger for the evening event which ran from 6 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. Piper Heidsick champagne was also served along with a generous sampling of Bordeaux inspired canapes. And BREITLING, the Swiss chronologist created their BREITLING GRAND CRU CHALLENGE, a contest testing the wine expertise of a selected number of guests who vied for some very interesting prizes. These included a BREITLING CHRONOMAT WATCH, magnums and double magnums of BORDEAUX WINES, and more.
